As the City Disappears, Let's Talk about Modernity

HATCH Series TPE No. 1 explores the creative trajectory of the participating artists, in hope of rendering their individual view, response, deconstruction, and genealogy of their creative reaction and its tension between the subjective modernity in artists’ internal cosmography. Through presenting the works and process of the featured artist, HATCH Series TPE No. 1 aims to document the displaced and nomadic experience they shared and the transitory state of mind displaced into a context of the globalized post-modern city life.

Re: Design

Titled Re:Design, Hatch’s third edition, in its on-going exhibition series, invites Nicole Shaub as guest co-curator, along with 9 featured artists to present their work on the fluctuating parameters of art, design, and craft and its relationship with our contemporary experience. This exhibition intends to present an amalgamation of different interpretations of this phenomenon as it exists in cultural production.

Between the Concrete

Cities act as an integral facet of cultural development. With the growth of modern globalization, they serve as a site for ideological cross-pollination and cultural exchange, while also functioning as symbols of modernization and progress.

A part of the overall purpose of HATCH Series, is to explore the unique conditions that inform the work and process of artists living in urban contexts. Inspired by the ideas explored by several artists from HATCH Series NY No. 1 | Selfhood: Beyond ____ Archetype, we found a trend in terms of artists’ interests in the construction of space - both metaphorically and formally as well as in a realistic sense of their physical environment.

As there was a natural inclination towards making sense of and constructing meaning within the complex terrain the creatives are situated, we wanted to leverage HATCH Series NY No. 2 as an opportunity to highlight this relationship between people and their environment in an urban landscape. This includes an examination of the communities they belong to as well as the physical space they occupy in order to provide an open ended discourse around what exists under the surface of the metropolis as an idealized/romanticized mirage.

Selfhood: Beyond ________ Archetype

In the current socio-political climate, identity and its plethora of complexities have emerged at the forefront of our collective consciousness.

For our inaugural exhibition we have invited 15 artists to participate in bringing their work that collectively provides a survey of ideas, concepts, and criticism that either formally or informally speak to subject of identity.

These works not only range from subjective and intimate perspectives to GRANDER social and philosophical concerns but are also presented through a multitude of creative practices and disciplines that the HATCH Series as a project aims to bring together.

Inspired by the concept of an incubator, HATCH Series aims to provide an ever changing space for these interdisciplinary dialogues that are rarely presented together in parallels. We encourage viewers to consider each artist’s work and practice in its singularity, in clusters, and as a whole.

We hope for tonight to be an occasion for open conversation and a chance to celebrate the talent and creativity of our peers.
